Coveralls vs Overalls: Which is Right For You?
With a rapid rise of construction in Australia and the continual improvement in PPE and safety gear, there has been a growing demand for coveralls and overalls. But what’s the difference? They both have a strong place in the workwear world and have been around for decades, however they’ve gone through their evolutions to cater to specific industries.

Overalls: A Classic Workwear Staple
Historically known as bib and brace overalls, they are also referred to as dungarees or just plain overalls. Whatever you call them, they’ve been a staple in workwear for hundreds of years. The design consists of two pieces, a trouser element and attached bib and shoulder straps. They're a popular choice for carpenters and plumbers, but in recent years, the fashion world has also been inspired to create pieces that draw from the heritage of this functional apparel
The main benefit of overalls is the practicality of durable workwear apparel with plenty of easy access pockets, while also allowing a full range of motion with your arms not restricted. The other benefit of overalls compared with coveralls is, it's lighter weight and more breathable. The key issue with overalls is that they don’t cover the entirety of your body, hence you have to consider wearing a durable shirt layer underneath for sufficient protection of your upper body.
Australian brands like Hard Yakka and SUK Workwear produce high-quality overalls like the Y01010 Bib & Brace, the Y01555 Action Back and for women, the popular styles include the SUK Yard Suit and the Roper Suit. There are also Hi-Vis options like the Y01526 Hi-Vis Action Back.

Coveralls: Full Body Protection
Coveralls, also known as Boiler Suits, are a one-piece garment that covers the entire body from neck to ankle, with the focus being complete protection. They’re the ultimate workwear PPE and engineered to counter numerous hazards that many trades and jobs encounter daily. You’ll commonly see coveralls in manufacturing, mining, and other physically demanding professions.
The versatility of coveralls has expanded beyond traditional industrial settings and they’ve now merged heavily into many retail and hospitality environments. In the fashion world, they are more commonly referred to as boiler suits, but in PPE and workwear, they are usually referred to as coveralls. However both names refer to the same thing.
Whatever you call them, we’ve got a complete range of men's and women's coveralls from leading Australian brands. For the ladies, there the SUK Ringer Suite. And for the traditional tradies, check out Hard Yakka's range of lightweight, cotton drill or Hi-Visibility safety coveralls.
Choosing the Right Garment
Whilst workwear nowadays is extremely versatile and designed with function and comfort in mind, it’s still important to consider the unique differences in each garment you choose. Adhering to your specific industry's PPE requirements is an absolute must, but if you have the freedom to go sleeveless in warmer environments, then the overalls are a bit more comfortable.
Ultimately, it comes down to the material, fit, and features when selecting any piece of work clothing.
