Gone Walkabout: A Weekend Escape to Macedon

In this round of Gone Walkabout, we’re tagging along with Daniel and his partner as they duck out of the Melbourne grind for a much-needed breather in the Macedon Ranges. Keen to swap screens for scenery, they hit the road in search of fresh air, good vino, and time to reconnect. From climbing Hanging Rock to kicking back at a cosy Riparide stay, this trip was all about slowing down and soaking up the best of regional Vic.

Who did you travel with, and what inspired this adventure?
I travelled with my partner—we really wanted to spend some time away from Melbourne and needed a recharge in nature.

Where did you go, and what was the highlight of your destination?
We went to Macedon, and I’d say the biggest highlight was Hanging Rock. The views and stone formations are unlike anything I’ve seen in Victoria.

Where did you stay—were you camping, glamping, or enjoying a cozy retreat?
We stayed in Macedon at a cosy Riparide accommodation. It was the perfect way to balance comfort and adventure, especially after long days out and about.

What were the most memorable activities or experiences you had?
We went to Hanging Rock Winery and tasted some delicious wine. You’re also able to see local artwork exhibited around the winery, which was such a nice touch.

While the region can still get a bit chilly this time of year, our G.A.B. Bushshirt and classic wool vests kept us warm and comfortable while out exploring.

What were your top three essentials for the trip?
Recharge, connect, and bask in nature.

What wildlife or natural wonders did you encounter along the way?
Sanatorium Lake, Hanging Rock, and lots of native Australian birds.

Having Kidman hats on hand was also a lifesaver—kept the sun off and added a bit of classic Aussie style to the trip.

Which boots did you wear, and how did they perform?
I wore the Mongrel K91070 Elastic Sided Boots, and they were so comfortable right out of the box. I have naturally wide feet and most things don’t fit me well—but these felt like I’d owned them for years.

The G.A.B. vests kept us warm and dry.

What was your favourite moment or memory from the trip?
Spending time with my partner, catching up on our relationship, and creating new memories we’ll cherish forever.

What advice would you give to someone planning a similar escape?
Just go. There are always a million reasons not to see the world, but you won’t regret creating memories—they’re all we really have.

Where are you dreaming of going next for your Aussie adventure?
I want to spend some time in Castlemaine—it’s one part of Victoria I’ve never seen properly. Definitely next on the bucket list!

A few days out bush was all it took for Daniel and his partner to feel recharged and ready to take on the world again. It’s a good reminder that you don’t have to go far to find something special—just throw your boots in the car, follow the road signs, and see where the weekend takes you. With places like Macedon on our doorstep, Aussie adventures are never too far away.
