How-to Measure Your Head for an Akubra Hat

Today, I'll be showing you how to measure your head for the perfect fitting Akubra hat. Let's get started!

First, you'll need a flexible measuring tape like this one. If you don't have one, a string and a ruler will work just fine. For best measuring practice, I recommend asking someone to help. Today I have Alex standing in.

Place the measuring tape around your head at the widest part. This is over the bump that you should feel at the back of your head, above your eyebrows and ears. This is where your hat will sit. Wrap the measuring tape around your head, making sure it's snug but not too tight. If you're using a string, hold it firmly in place without squeezing your head.

Now, take note of the measurement in either inches or centimetres, depending on your preference and be as exact as you can. If you're using a string, hold the point where it meets itself and measure the length with a ruler.

Once you have your measurement, it's time to find the perfect hat size. Compare your head measurement on the sizing chart to determine the appropriate hat size for you. It’s likely you’re measurement will be in between 2 centimetres, if this is the case you round up to the larger size because the hat will shrink, not stretch.

The reason it shrinks is because the hats have an internal leather hat band and with heat and perspiration the leather dries out and as it dries out it shrinks. Also for accuracy purposes, it’s a good idea to measure several times.

If your hat fits too big you can always pack the inside of the band with a hat filler or a piece of foam if you have some at home. And if the hat shrinks you can use a hat stretcher to bring it back to size. Both the hat fillers and hat stretchers can be purchased from our website.
